Modern Treatment World
The Reason we refer to select programs is that we are satisfied that they leave nothing out of the total recovery process.
If getting the drugs or alcohol out of an alcoholics or addicts system was the answer then all people would need is detoxification.
They would detox and then go live happily ever after.
The fair percentage of people that will detox and then attend a 28 day program and stay sober after a 28 day program is around 20%.
The percentage of people staying sober after 6 to 12 months in the extended care programs we refer to is much greater.
Consequences being what they are today, This critical timing we are often talking about is the difference between not getting a DUI and getting one or a person over dosing or not over dosing , a marriage ending or not ending even a person dying or not dying.
This has been proved true again and again.
You’re probably asking why do 28 day programs advertise 28 days as the magic number.
My personal opinion is that if you told the public the truth about a commitment for 6 to 12 months no one would agree to going 10-15-20 years ago.
That is not the case anymore. Before the only people that would sign up for a year of treatment were health care professionals and their families for the most part because they are the ones that see first hand the people that did not stay sober after many different attempts. So they understand the process and the time frame it takes to make the process a working part of the mind.
Plus the fact that most insurance will only cover so many days.
Slowly but surely people are understanding exactly why 6 – 12 months are suggested
Loved ones and insurance companies are no longer co-signing the cries from the primary care providers and the addicts and alcoholics.
“That we promise this time it will be different.”
People are realizing that it is (Show me time) addicts and alcoholics can be very convincing they even believe what they are saying is true at the time.
Some will cry it is all brain washing, and then Doctors and eventually the addicts themselves admit that perhaps their brains did need a little washing.
The process takes 6 to 12 months – I have never seen one person get up and take a one year chip and say – It was a horrible year, I am mad I did this.
Most mention at one point that they are happier today then they ever could have imagined.
Intensive counseling, supportive structured living and a whole lot learning about the 12 step process, meeting etiquette, different kinds of meetings, getting a sponsor, working the steps, what do they mean, getting a commitment and why? Working with others and why? Each lesson learned is often hard fought.
By the end of 6 months to a year most all the answers are answered and the reservations are smashed, then it will be time to venture out into the world with your new tools and a comfortable network of friends. The program is often described as a million dollar program the only challenge is that, it is acquired by most of us a nickel at a time.
